6 Central American countries and the Dominican Republic has prohibited by law to fish for lobster from 1st April to 30th June due to its overexploitation. Imported lobster is allowed by permission but obviously it will not be fresh.

“During this period the capture, processing, meat or mass possession and marketing of the spiny lobster, spotted spiny lobster, spiny rock lobster and spiny lobster mom are prohibited,” Francisco Frias, director of the Dominican Council of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Codopesca), said.

The aim is to protect the species during the period of increased reproduction and since the law was implemented they have already recovered 15% of the population, although there is still the risk of extinction of this specie.
